Mercer Street has been a tangled mess for more than 40 years. You know the drill:
waiting in gridlock traffic, scrambling across four lanes, dodging confused drivers
trying to do the same thing. Or maybe you drive blocks out of your way to avoid
Mercer altogether.
The good news is work will begin soon to straighten out the mess. The financing
plan was completed Feb. 17 when
Sen. Patty Murray announced
that Seattle would get $30 million in federal stimulus money to rebuild Mercer.
The Seattle Department of Transportation will begin work soon. The first step will
be to demolish vacant buildings in the right of way.
There’s no time to waste. Not only is traffic getting worse, but Mercer will be one
of only two points where traffic from the new waterfront tunnel can exit and connect
with downtown streets.
On this website from Vulcan Inc. you will find factual and current information about
the plan to fix Mercer Street. On this site you will find fact sheets on the history,
financing and growing need to fix Mercer. You can also read details about how Mercer
will be an essential link to the tunnel.
