TUNNEL CONNECTION

There are no two ways about it, a new Mercer Street is essential to the success of the new waterfront tunnel.

City, county and state governments, as well as freight haulers and many neighborhoods, support fixing Mercer. They recognize that Mercer will be the critical connection between surface streets and the new tunnel.

Mercer will be one of only two points where tunnel traffic can exit to connect with downtown streets. If left as is, cars, trucks and buses will fight to navigate the Mercer Mess just to get in or out of the tunnel. Traffic will clog the city center and traffic jams will spread for miles in every direction.

That’s why the tunnel project agreement among city, county and the state calls for full funding to change Mercer Street into a straight-shot, east-west, corridor.

A two-way Mercer Street is essential to the tunnel because it will provide:

  • A seamless and direct route between I-5 and the tunnel.

  • An efficient new freight connection from I-5 and the tunnel to Seattle’s industrial areas.

  • An improved access route to and from the tunnel for the Fremont, Ballard, Interbay, Queen Anne, Uptown, Capitol Hill and other neighborhoods.
